Protective shield virus red Exclamation Warning Caution Computer in dark with word virus

Seeing a message like “Your computer is infected” or “Call now to fix a security issue” can feel alarming, but you can breathe a sigh of relief because it’s not real, it’s a scam.

Scammers are using fake security pop-ups to create urgency and trick you into calling a number, clicking a link, or paying for a problem that does not exist.

How the Scam Works

These pop-ups may look like they are from trusted companies, claim that your device has a virus, and urge you to act immediately. If you respond to a pop-up, a scammer may ask you for payment, personal information, or access to your device.

Red Flags to look for:
  • Urgent messages telling you to call them immediately or click a link.
  • Pop-ups that won’t close.
  • Requests to remote into or access your device
  • Any requests for payment, especially through buying gift cards.

Real companies will never ask you to call a number or communicate with you through a pop-up.

What to Do:
  • Don’t click or call.
  • Close your browser or restart your device.
  • Run a trusted security scan on your device.
  • Contact a trusted company directly through their official website.

If you believe you may be dealing with a scammer:
  1. Reach out to your bank and let them know of the fraudulent activity as soon as possible.
  2. Report to the Federal trade Commission (FTC) at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

If you ever receive a suspicious pop-up, request, message, or phone call, even if they claim to be with your bank or a trusted company,
always
verify through official channels before taking action or providing any kind of personal information.
